From my new office in the library ;)
So, I'm working from the library this afternoon, and it's interesting. (Yes, blogging does count—it's a very important piece of a marketing plan these days, you know.) I had to wrap up a few things for my contract customer, and am about to work on transcribing some handwritten writing I did on my manuscript last night. Going to try to get here earlier most of the time when I work from here, but today I just had the goal of getting here, and almost copped out, but then made myself. Glad I did, because it sure is easier to focus without the pull of all the things in the house. It was pretty quiet for a while, then the after-school crowd started trickling in. The junior highers at the table next to me are making a little noise as they work on a group project, but not bad at all. Just a little whispering and giggling. Overall, very well behaved and not much of a distraction. Could even be considered research as much of my manuscript revolves around teens, although it is not a YA book. I'm wondering how loud my typing is and if it's very disturbing to those around me. I type fast and have been told I pound on the keyboard pretty hard. J But, typing is not against the rules in a library. On the other hand, in spite of the signs posted quite clearly and in bold letters that say "QUIET ZONE, no talking, using cell phones, or playing audio devices without headphones," a man at the next table has held two very loud and distracting and lonnnng conversations on his cell phone. Having worked in customer service for years, people on phones around me really don't bother me that much, but it's just the principle of the thing, you know? There are other areas of the library that are not quiet zones, so perhaps he could go there. Anyway, I was pretty distracted because he went into this whole discourse with someone who is obviously very important about how he didn't get some project done on time yesterday because his kid picked up a syringe off the street and stuck himself with it and so he spent the day at the emergency room!!!! He went into details about how they won't know if the kid was exposed to any diseases, and probably won't know for some time, and could be affected for the rest of his life. What a nightmare! How could I not listen and stop working with that going on? Who knows, maybe I'll get some good (or at least frightening if not exactly "good") story ideas here, but I hope I get some work done, too.

Our libraries don't even have a quiet zone! But you'd think if they've gone to the effort to make one, they'd at least make a token effort to enforce it. It's hard to know what's better - going into a writerly zone and not hearing any of it, or getting those incredible (and awful!) little stories people drop without thinking. Glad you got out of the house though! I always find it productive.
