Tuesday trials and triumphs

Well, after a crazy night, I wasn't sure I could show up at the page today. I wasn't sleepy when I went to bed, and tossed and turned for a while. Then ... the phone started ringing. My husband's flight out for business was cancelled for no apparent reason, and American sure didn't want us to miss that news. Their computer called us at 3:30, 4:00, and 4:30 a.m. I confirmed it each time, and would just barely start drifting off when the phone would ring again! EEESH! Todd finally got up and got online and checked in, and I guess that did the trick. It was 6:30 a.m. before I was sleepy enough to drift off again. Then, it was off to the ortho, where they discovered Emilie's been wearing her rubberbands backwards for the last two times! No WONDER her teeth aren't moving, they say. I could even verify that she's been wearing them fairly faithfully since the last time when the ortho said he was "just a spectator" at this point! The tech watched her put them back in today and was like, "Hey, who showed you to put them in like that?" No telling who was at fault, but poor girl won't get her braces off this summer after all, it seems. Well, not right away anyway.

So, we got home from that and I wasn't sure I'd have the mental energy to write. I ended up taking a couple of hours for a nap, eating lunch at 3:30, and then the girls basically sat me down with a sign Emilie drew.

"Writing in Progress! Do not disturb unless there is an EMERGENCY!"

They wanted me to go to my desk like I did yesterday so they could put it on the door, but I was in the mood to sit on the couch today, and so they put it on the couch pillow behind my head. Kristen only bugged me once, to ask some question like "Can we go see a movie?" or something equally important. I laughed and asked if it was an emergency and she said yes, she was having a midlife crisis (at age 9, no less). But, she realized her error and took off for nether lands.

And I got it done! You can see that today I am over 41K! I was at 40,997, and thought, YES, I can surely add three more words to cross that line. (All it would take was putting in a few extra thats, you know.) I came up with a few more than that.

I am liking this week so far.

Julie, that's awesome!!! And I love that your girls support you. As to the phone...I would have probably chucked it against the wall. I'm a light sleeper, so it would have taken a long time for me to fall asleep after that. Seems like you and I are wired similarly. I never knew that the rubber bands could be put on backward! My son wore braces for a year-and-a-half, and no one ever said a word! Hopefully, her teeth move quickly and she can get those braces off!

Congrats on passing the 41K mark! It's all smooth sailing from here on. When you were younger, did you ever think you would write so much? You should be proud of yourself for getting so far along, Julie! By November, you'll have plenty to share in those late night critiques :)

Julie, congratulations on that milestone!

Don't get too hung up on the word count thing, though. Just for the record, 100K would be longer than any of my novels.

I think I need something like a number to pace myself, Sara. I'll try not to obsess too much about it in the end, though.

It does scare me a little that I'm almost 50K into my WIP and only four days have passed in the story! It might be the longest novel known to man in the end. Hehe. Good thing it's easier to cut than add...or at least that's what I hear!
