Working titles

I think my working title might be going along with those 20K words. Just another confirmation that it was the right thing to do. I realize working titles are seldom used when a book is actually published, but a girl can dream, right?

The title I've been using all along is "right" for either story, but it's "perfect" for the cut subplot. So, just in case, I'd like to leave that option available.

In the meantime, I've been contemplating a new title to send along with the manuscript when those requests start pouring in. (Again, a girl can dream, right?) If nothing else, at least for the queries. Even if the working title is ultimately scrapped, it can help the reception of your manuscript, so it's still important. Or so I've heard.

If you are published, have you been able to keep your working title(s)? If not, how hard was it to let go and "bond" with the new one? Heck, maybe you were so excited to get a contract, you didn't care at all! That's probably how I'd be. Well, unless it's some super duper cheezy title that screams, "I am so wrong for this story!"

I've noticed a popular naming convention in the romance genre that uses "Her" plus more words, which makes me squirm. Like (and these are off the top of my head, have no idea if they have been used) . . .

Her greatest honor
Her majestic hero
Her biggest mistake
Um . . .
Her secret chocolate stash

Hehe. You get the picture. Nothing personal if you have one of these titles, they just don't work for me. :-) At any rate, it's probably a good thing I'm not writing in the romance genre, right?

Guess it's time to get back to wasting time thinking about new working titles instead of doing the actual work. Although, I have done some good work in the last few days.

I personally like the one about the chocolate stash... I wish the 'her' in the title was me... I'm dreaming too... :p

Did you give up chocolate as well as Facebook for Lent, Bungi? ;-)

I was very happy and relieved that I was able to keep Orange Mint and Honey. My editor loved it, but said they'd only keep it if it worked for marketing...and it did! :)

Two of my nonfiction working titles were changed, but were changed with my input, so it was ok. And I thought there were better.

Orange Mint and Honey is such a unique title, Carleen, so it doesn't surprise me that they kept it! It conjures up such pleasant thoughts.
